Balmville, N.Y. | $1.187 million

A Queen Anne Revival house built in 1880, on 1.2 acres

This four-bedroom, three-and-a-half-bathroom house is a few blocks from the Newburgh Beacon Bridge Pedestrian and Bike Trail and a 10-minute drive from Metro-North’s Beacon station, which offers service to Midtown Manhattan. Restaurants and bars along the Hudson River are within a five-minute drive, as is a library.

Storm King Art Center is 20 minutes away by car, West Point is 30 minutes away and New York City is two hours away.

Off one side of the living room is an oak-paneled library with its own fireplace and hidden doors that lead to a formal dining room, which is also accessible from the foyer. Off the other side of the living room is the kitchen, where the sellers added a custom oak bench and lilac marble backsplash. It also has a LaCanche double oven and warmer, as well as a center island topped with butcher block.

Stairs in the foyer lead to the second floor, which has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a laundry room. Inlay along the hardwood floors in the primary bedroom is original, and a bay of windows faces the backyard. The other two bedrooms both have access to a balcony, and one bathroom has a walk-in shower while the other has a combined tub and shower.

The third floor has a bedroom with pitched ceilings, a full bathroom and several flexible spaces used now as a gym and a home office.

Outdoor space: A first-floor covered deck faces the river and has steps that continue down into a backyard with new flagstone patio and a lawn framed by mature landscaping. The driveway has three parking spots.

Newport, R.I. | $1.195 million

An 1890 Colonial Revival house, on 0.1 acres

This four-bedroom, three-bathroom house is within walking distance of a waterfront park and within a five-minute drive of Thames Street, home to many of Newport’s shops and restaurants. The Breakers and other Gilded Age mansions now open to the public are within a 10-minute drive, and Fort Adams State Park, home to both the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, is 20 minutes away.

Providence is a 45-minute drive away and Boston takes less than two hours.

Indoors: A red brick patio is at the front of the house, and from there two doors open to a foyer with hardwood floors and stairs that continue to the second floor.

The living room, behind the foyer, has a gas fireplace and a wall of built-in storage, and an office off the living room has strips of exposed brick. The kitchen and dining room are on the other side of the living room. There’s a built-in gas cooktop in the kitchen and doors that open to the back patio in the dining room. A powder room is also off this space.

The second-floor landing, where a window faces the street, is used as a playroom. Two bedrooms on this level can hold queen-size beds, and another, with hardwood floors, fits a double bed. A full bathroom off the landing has a combined tub and shower.

On the third floor is the primary bedroom suite, where original windows overlook mature trees. Closets have been built along one wall, and the bathroom has a soaking tub and two large windows.

Outdoor space: Off the dining room, steps lead down to the stone patio, which is shaded in one corner by a mature tree and has space for raised garden boxes. The driveway has one parking spot.

A Colonial Revival house built in 1901, on 0.2 acres

This four-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house is within the Fort Street Historic District, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was designed by the architect J. E. Tourtellotte, whose other work in Boise includes the Idaho State Capitol. A grocery co-op and a wine bar are a block away, and downtown Boise is within walking distance.

Boise Airport is 10 minutes away by car, and Boise National Forest takes 40 minutes.

Indoors: The brick and fishscale shingles on this home’s facade are painted blue, and the front door, flanked by original leaded-glass windows, is at the center of a covered porch.

Off one side of the foyer is the living room, where the hardwood floors and the wood window frames are original. Off the other side of the foyer is an office where a fireplace has an original brick surround.

The kitchen, at the back of the house, has custom-built cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, including a wall oven and a gas cooktop set in front of a red brick backsplash. A dining area off the kitchen has doors that open to the backyard, and a powder room and a laundry room are around the corner.

The primary suite is on the first floor, off the foyer. The bedroom, which fits a king bed, has street-facing windows and a vintage-inspired light fixture, and a full bathroom is en suite.

There are three bedrooms on the second floor, reached via stairs from the foyer. All three can hold queen-size beds, and a bathroom on this level has a walk-in shower with a bench seat.

Outdoor space: The rear deck, big enough for an outdoor dining setup, provides access to both a hot tub and a fenced-in yard. A detached garage holds one car.
