Copa Airlines suspends flights to Venezuela; pilots report intermittencies in navigation signals
PANAMA CITY (AP) — The Panamanian airline Copa Airlines, one of the few that maintains flights to Venezuela, announced on Wednesday night the temporary suspension of all its flights to and from Caracas scheduled for December 4 and 5, after pilots reported intermittencies in one of the navigation signals.
“Copa Airlines informs that, due to intermittencies in one of the aircraft navigation signals reported by our pilots on the day today — a situation that at no time compromised operational safety — we have made the preventive decision to temporarily suspend flights to and from Caracas,” the airline said in a statement.
The airline indicated that the incident did not put the safety of its operations at risk, but gave rise to a preventive suspension, which will be evaluated in the next 24 hours. The decision comes amid a regional climate marked by new tensions between the United States and Venezuela.
International airlines began canceling flights to Venezuela last week after the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned pilots to use caution when flying around the country due to intensified military activity.
In addition, US President Donald Trump said in a social media message that airspace “over and around” Venezuela should be considered “entirely closed.”
