Bold repeating lines in colors that could be pulled straight from a birthday hat are injecting a bit of happiness into households across the country.

In the last year, optimistic-looking stripes have overrun an American home décor market that had, for decades, been focused on minimal fuss and solid shades of beige, white and gray. For many, the arrival of these thick stripes marks a gradual easing back into the worlds of color and pattern. And they’re blanketing everything from ceilings to switch plates.

“It gives you a dopamine feeling,” said Katherine Finder, the chief merchandising officer for Anthropologie’s home division. “It’s a step up from a solid, but it’s a version of a solid.” The retailer has invested heavily in bright and upbeat striped products as part of its broader offering. The only other décor motif performing as strongly are products that feature depictions of dogs, Ms. Finder said.

Melissa McCray, the owner of online boutique Two Webster based in Osterville, Mass., said that she has trouble knowing exactly how many striped products to stock because they often sell out. “It feels approachable,” she said of her assortment, which includes waste bins ($60) and hand-painted dinner plates ($44).

Those products are two of many currently available on the market, much of them boasting fat bands of joyful-looking colors in eccentric combinations.

Murano glass cups by Laguna~B (145 euros, or about $170 each), come in yellow-orange and royal blue stripes, and among the many striped wallpapers available right now is a bubblegum pink and brown version sold by Rebel Walls ($5.30 per square foot).

At Urban Outfitters, one can buy swivel chairs in leprechaun green and cyan stripes ($499), Pierce & Ward sells linen tissue box covers with Pepto-Bismol pink and mauve lines ($75), and dust ruffles sold by Dillard’s come with alternating blocks of cornflower blue and school bus yellow ($38 for a queen size).

The American household isn’t the only environment where stripes have recently attracted a high degree of interest. At the White House, marigold-and-white-striped umbrellas are a distinct feature of the renovated Rose Garden. They take cues from similar lawn furniture at President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla.

Beach towels at the Grand Cayman resort Palm Heights boast a nearly identical stripe to the White House’s umbrellas. The Turkish linens, $70, are currently sold out on the resort’s website but have become a status symbol among certain corners of the fashion and art worlds and can be spotted across social media feeds, slung around the torsos of celebrities and influencers visiting the tropical destination.

While some homeowners crave small touches of color and pattern, others are covering living rooms or breakfast nooks with matching seat cushions, wallpaper and sometimes even accent pillows for a look known as “stripe drenching.”

“It almost has a cabana feel to it that’s playful and modern,” said the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based designer Sarah Sherman Samuel of the stripe-drenching look, which she has implemented in a sunny yellow-and-cream repeating pattern. The London-based brand Colours of Arley specializes in stripe drenching and sells bespoke accessories and wall treatments that are available in hundreds of color combinations.

The arrival of stripe-accented homes could be read as a marker of our times. The motif’s popularity is growing in a period when the nationwide cost of living is also steadily increasing. Ms. McCray of Two Webster suspects that stripes are appealing to people looking to update their living spaces without committing to the budget required of a full scale renovation.

The last time that stripes were this prevalent in American homes was during another era of economic uncertainty. A growing suburban middle class in the 1920s and 1930s gravitated toward stripes, then also looking to add joy to their homes during challenging times, according to Catherine Futter, the Brooklyn Museum’s senior curator of decorative arts.

This past year, Ms. Futter became a member of the stripes club herself by purchasing numerous sets of striped sheets from the textile company Brooklinen (from $169).

It’s the first pair of printed sheets Ms. Futter has had since her childhood, when her parents kept a linen closet stocked with floral motifs.

Beyond their upbeat appearance, the striped sheets have an added bonus: “You know how to straighten them out, the stripes keep you on a grid,” she said.
