Trooper Killed at Motor Vehicle Office in Delaware
A Delaware state trooper was killed after gunfire broke out at a motor vehicle office in Wilmington on Tuesday afternoon, leaving the gunman dead and additional people injured, the authorities said.
Deputies responded to a report of an active shooter shortly after 2 p.m. at the Division of Motor Vehicles office, according to a statement by the Delaware State Police.
Soon after, the State Police said there was no longer an active shooter and later that the trooper had been killed.
In a news conference on Tuesday evening, State Police officials said a 44-year-old man who was a customer at the motor vehicles office shot the trooper twice. A New Castle County police officer confronted the gunman and shot him, officials said. Another trooper sustained a minor injury, not from a gunshot, but did not need hospital treatment, and a woman was taken to a hospital with a minor injury, also not from a gunshot, they said.
“The Delaware State Police family today suffered a devastating loss,” Colonel William D. Crotty, the superintendent of the State Police, said at the news conference. “We lost a brother, a son, a best friend, a coach, a husband and a father.” He added, “His life was cut short by senseless violence.”
In a statement on Tuesday night, Gov. Matt Meyer of Delaware praised the trooper, whose name has not yet been disclosed. “Today, we mourn the loss of a Delaware state trooper who gave his life in the line of duty. He made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his fellow Delawareans, and our hearts are broken for his family. We are praying for them, their loved ones and every state trooper as they grieve this sudden and unimaginable loss.”
It was not clear what led to the shooting. The identities of the trooper and the shooter were not immediately released on Tuesday afternoon.
The authorities had asked people to the avoid the area. The Division of Motor Vehicles said it had closed that office, which is in New Castle County, and all others statewide on Tuesday afternoon. Local TV outlets showed a heavy police presence outside the office.
