A sprawling winter storm dumped snow from the Poconos in Pennsylvania to parts of New Brunswick in Canada on Tuesday, and it intensified across New England and Eastern Canada as the day went on.

The storm posed a risk for drivers through the evening commute as state troopers across New England and the Northeast responded to hundreds of vehicle crashes. The storm’s heaviest impacts were expected in New England, even as it was winding down for many in the Mid-Atlantic.

A winter storm warning — indicating current or imminent hazardous winter weather — came into effect on Tuesday morning and was to remain through early Wednesday for an area stretching northeast from upstate New York to eastern Maine.

The National Weather Service in Albany, N.Y., said it received reports of half an inch to 2.5 inches of snow in eastern New York and western New England. A further four inches of snow was expected in these areas, the Weather Service said, warning that there will be hazardous conditions for drivers. Snow also fell in the lower Hudson Valley, but warm temperatures meant the chief precipitation would be rain, according to the National Weather Service in New York.

Flurries began shortly before 8 a.m. in the central Maine town of Winslow, where 6 to 9 inches of snow was expected. Area schools were set to close by lunchtime.

At a gas station in Winslow, John Wood, 53, filled up his pickup truck and an extra gas canister before beginning his workday processing deer meat. Mr. Wood had a yellow snowplow attachment on the front of his truck, which he said he would use later in the day to plow driveways for friends and family. The roads were a little slick on Tuesday morning, he said, but Mr. Wood’s greater concern was with inexperienced drivers during the first major snow event of the winter.
