Despite the proliferation of coffee shops, more Americans are buying coffee makers and brewing at home, according to a recent study by the National Coffee Association, an industry group. Nearly every style has become more popular since 2020, from simple drip machines to brewers that grind beans and brew to order. Ownership of countertop espresso machines, for example, has grown by 50 percent, while those finicky, slow, manual pour-over filter brewers have seen a 20 percent increase.

“Home-brewing, regardless of whether it is filter or espresso, is definitely growing,” said Chi Sum Ngai, the co-founder of Coffee Project, which operates several New York City cafes as well as a training center and online store.

Ms. Ngai said her customers want to own multiple kinds of brewers, especially manual-style coffee makers like pour-over or Chemex brewers and moka pots, and that they like to use each with a different variety of coffee.

“We get calls and emails all the time with people asking for recipes for brewers or what to get for the person in their life who is a ‘coffee person,’” Ms. Ngai said. (Coffee-making recipes outline the ideal ratio of water, beans and steeping time, as well as water temperature and grind size.) She has even seen an increase in the sales of mineral extracts, which allow customers to adjust the flavor profile of their water.

Jane Abrahams, a professional organizer, said the recent obsession with coffee gear is part of our post-pandemic turn toward cooking more at home.

“Everybody wants a coffee area and a coffee station,” said Ms. Abrahams, who has designed dozens of these. They typically include storage for several styles of coffee makers, from low-fuss Keurigs to $5,500 Jura bean-to-brew machines (but not so much the French press, the only type of coffee maker that has seen a decline in popularity since 2020).

Some of this may be a result of more people working from home. But Ms. Ngai thinks it’s more about interest in the craft of making coffee: “People are really upping their game for their enjoyment at home.”
